As you may have noticed, it’s been a little over two months since my last entry in the Archive. This is due to many things; work, family, moving house and the things that always seem to creep up when you don’t expect them. However, the biggest spanner in the works of the DAA – if you can call it that- is the announcement of Cyan’s Lore project.
The Guild of Messengers reported that at the October All Guilds meeting that Cyan has teamed with Inkwork Productions to centralise all lore pertaining to the Myst universe.
Based on the article that the GoM posted, it sounds like this will concern lore that is already out there in various forms and locations and that Cyan is simply planning to gather it all together into one central location, such as a wiki. However, there may be info out there that is not as widely known/ easily accessed as it was given in an old Uru chat, or a personal e-mail, as RAWA was very good about answering fan questions outside of “official” channels.
So, what does this mean for the D’ni Art Archive? Well, for a start it means that articles such as the The Wahrk won’t be necessary because much of the information presented in that post (if not all) is verified by various official sources. Thus, if Cyan’s Lore Project has all that information ready to hand there is no need for an outside source such as the DAA to report it.
On the other hand, posts such as The Nexus contain much conjecture as not much information is known about their subjects. These such posts may still hold value as hypothesis on unknown elements of D’ni culture may still be worth pursuing.
In the end, though, it will depend on exactly what the Lore Project turns out to be. While GoW’s post suggests it will only be a gathering of information, Cyan has been releasing new information of late, in particular new D’ni words for brother, to love deeply and arch. If more information is revealed then hypothesis-based posts may also be of little value.
So I will wait and see what the Lore Project brings. Should it render DAA inert I will archive what work there is here and find another way of maintaining a presence, however small, within the Myst/Uru community.
P.S. Just want to say that I am very excited about Cyan’s Lore Project. Regardless of what it may mean for this site, I can’t wait to see it. 😀
